Larc taking tours along the beach

The towns of 1770 and Agnes Water on Queensland’s Discovery Coast are wonderful family holiday destinations. The unusual name marks the year that Capt James Cook became the first European to set foot in what is now Queensland and this happened at Round Hill headland in the year 1770. The historical significance of the site is marked by a cairn of rocks and a plaque. Agnes Water lies just to the south of 1770 and a beautiful beach joins the two. This is Australia’s northern most surfing beach and has excellent surf when the wind blows strong from the south east for several days. It is a fantastic family holiday destination with excellent swimming and surfing together with quiet waterways at 1770 that are brimming with fish. It is an excellent boating waterway.

On the north side of the inlet the beach runs up to Bustard Head Lighthouse and there is a unique tour available on an amphibious Larc which takes you there and provides lunch and an expert commentary. Just offshore is the fabulous Great Barrier Reef and there are regular tours here that operate on a daily basis to the magnificent lagoon at Lady Musgrave Island. There is also a coral atoll at the reef and this is a really special place to visit. Excellent fishing charters are also available for either a day or an extended trip. This area is a noted fisherman’s paradise with nearly all trips returning with a full icebox. There is an excellent nine hole golf course at Agnes Water that is available to the public.

Lifesavers on the beach

Most of the accommodation in the region is at Agnes water although there is some limited accommodation at 1770. The Edge on Beaches resort is really popular as is the Mantra Pavillions which is right on the beachfront. In 1770 the Beach Shacks and the 1770 Sovereign retreat are both really great. Those looking for a short stay might choose the Mango tree motel. There is also excellent backpacker accommodation and a really popular caravan park and camping area. Regular interstate coach services service the area or you can drive in a rental car or campervan.

The towns of 1770 and Agnes water are a great holiday destination and one that should defiantly be on your holiday itinerary.
